Gross bug, incredible detail
Gross bug, incredible detail,
originally uploaded by jasra.
Yes, that's the corner of the litter box. No, I don't know what kind of bug it is beyond it being the icky kind with a lot of legs that causes me to want to not be in the same room with it.

Click original size to see the amazing (and gross) detail.

Update: You guys are all so helpful! The people on LJ had a lot of comments and links about the leggy bugger in the photo too. Damn, the Internet is neat.

It is a house centipede. They eat bugs and larvae, and are generally skittish around people, animals, bright light, etc.

Unfortunately, they are damned near impossible to get rid of. The only thing that really works is to dry out any moist areas, and eliminate their food source. Hard enough to do in a house with no animals or children, where you can put down lots of the really strong poisons. I have just learned to live with them, they really do keep the other bugs down quite well.

For you guys, I figure ignoring it and letting the cat deal with them is probably the best option. :)

Well, if they're eating other bugs and larvae, then they're ok in my book. I'll just be careful not to make squealy-girly noises and startle [info]wispfox. :D

I don't think the cat much cares about bugs. Weird kitty.

my cat eats them... she's utterly facinated... but then I think they may make her sick, or tickle her throat... silly kitty needs to learn about not eating the creepy crawlers.

It is my opinion that these house centipedes 'sting' me when I touch them; having read through your other link, it doesn't look like this is a normal reaction to them. Wikipedia says that they _do_ bite, however. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_centipede)

I don't care for them (not just because they 'sting', but because they can destroy my trained spider army. :(

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Sorry, house centipedes squick me slightly more than cockroaches do. They're both leggy and quick.

Happily, my cat has been known to eat one. :)

Peach (http://www.mit.edu/~rk/peach.jpg) thought they were a gourmet delicacy. I hope he is enjoying a lot of them in kitty heaven.

Yeah, that's how I feel about 'em. [info]wispfox asked me if I killed it and I said "ew, no. I left the room.".
